Of the various characters to use the name, the Abyss of the Butlerverse is the earliest by just about any standard. He is an evolved immortal Homo Habilus who is the oldest of grumpy old men, convinced that everything was better the way it was when he was growing up around a million years ago before those young punk homo sapiens started moving in with their loud music and fire. He is also among the grumpiest because his plan is to kill everyone on Earth just to get some peace and quiet back.
