Hawkeye is the quintessential archer of the Marvel universe. Trained in a circus (you could still do that in the silver age), Clint Barton honed his skills until he was a master archer. For some people, though, the world is not enough, and Barton longed for more than circus life so took the next logical step and became a super villain. He then parleyed that somehow into a career as a super hero. In the years since he has been a steadfast member of the Avengers, even leading incarnations of the team at times. And, lucky him, his powers don’t require a ton of CGI so he gets to be in the cinematic universe!
Of course, in a comic career as long as his, Clint Barton is not always Hawkeye. Clint Barton has operated under identities from time to time, even being Captain America at one point.
Hawkeye is also not always Clint Barton. When Clint took some time off from living the name passed to Kate Bishop. She served as Hawkeye for years with the Young Avengers. I think she even got to keep co-ownership of the name after Clint came back.
And Kate is just the best-known alternate Hawkeye. In one alternate universe Wolverine is Hawkeye for some reason. I’m sure that it makes perfect sense in context.
