In the Marvel universe, the name Captain Marvel has been used to apply to a number of heroes.

The first was an alien named Mar-vell who was a captain in their military. Captain Mar-Vell. Get it? Despite the ludicrously literal use of his name, this Captain Marvel was cornerstone character at Marvel. After his death, however, it would not be long before someone new would try out the name.

During the 80’s Monica Rambeau would give it shot. When she got super powers from a freaky accident she would serve as Captain Marvel even though she didn’t meet the dress code. She was a member of the Avengers for years before being name-shamed into changing her moniker to Photon.

After this a string of aliens would try the role on for size.

Genis-Vell was Mar-Vell’s artificially created son and the third Captain Marvel. Artificial or not, he was seemingly the most powerful version. He even destroyed the universe once. Good for him!

Phyla-Vell, his little sister, was the fourth Captain Marvel. She’s even more fake than he was; he made her up completely when the universe restarted. Even though she’s basically a figment of his imagination she gets to hang on to the name for a while.

Khn’nr was not related to Genis or Phyla; in fact, he was not even the same species. But he did use Mar-Vell’s DNA to duplicate his likeness and powers as Captain Marvel iteration number five.

Noh-Varr left Mar-Vell’s genetics alone but he did use copies of his equipment to become the sixth Captain Marvel. Oddly enough, each of these alien heroes (who were basically carbon copies of the original) would eventually drop the name like it was a set of training wheels and take on a new identity.

Carol Danvers was only somewhat related to Mar-Vell. She knew him and ripped of his costume as Ms. Marvel in the 80’s. She was the first human Captain Marvel in a while, even though she did share some alien DNA. She ran through a laundry list of super identities before settling on Captain Marvel. She would be the Captain Marvel to a new generation of Avengers.

In Marvel’s cinematic universe Carol Danvers is the original Captain Marvel, but not the only one. The MCU has also introduced Maria Rambeau (the mother of the second comic Captain Marvel) as a multiversal version of Captain Marvel.
