The Brotherhood of Mutants is a sort of anti-X-men; they are a group of young mutants gathered to learn to use their special abilities but not they were not interested in living peacefully with anyone. In fact, when they first appeared they were the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. I guess they decided the “evil” brand was bad for PR so they dropped the term in the interests of recruiting. There have been several iterations of the Brotherhood formed since the 60s.
